*Like its predecessor, the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) of World War II, training indigenous people to fight for their homes and land is the primary mission of US Special Forces (SF).

US 1st Special Forces (Airborne) consists of several Special Forces Groups (Airborne) and a few specialized Detachments smaller in size and more focused in technique than Groups. Each major SF Group is has a specific area of responsibility. When using the term "Green Beret" on a person, most Americans are thinking of 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) and Special Forces Operatioal Detachment Delta - commonly "Delta Force" - because these organizations have received the most publicity from the mainsteam media. In reality there are usually between 5 and 15 active Special Forces Groups and operational Detachments). Most members of SF are recruited from within the US Army.
